Irondequoit Fitness is our next Featured Business

(L to R) Board member Terry Palis, Irondequoit Fitness owner Joe Christiano, Board member Bob Spatola, Board VP Alice Willis-Hansen, Board President Rich Orczyk, and Board member David Shaheen.

The Irondequoit Chamber of Commerce is pleased to recognize Irondequoit Fitness of 471 East Ridge Road as the featured business for March 2017.

Joe Christiano, a lifelong Irondequoit resident and graduate of Irondequoit High School, has been in the gym and fitness business since 1996, opening Irondequoit Fitness in 2013.

“Back in 1996, I walked into Boundaries Gym (formerly of Hudson Avenue), and within a couple of months I started training clients," Joe says. When Boundaries closed in 2013, Christiano made the decision to open his own gym.

Irondequoit Fitness is the only locally-owned fitness center in Irondequoit. There are no contracts, initiation fees, or annual maintenance fees at Irondequoit Fitness. Joe is a certified personal trainer and is a title-winning Natural Pro Bodybuilder, including the Natural USA title. Christiano also promotes drug-free bodybuilding shows under the National Gym Association.

Christiano prides himself on knowing almost all of his gym members by name, which, he points out, is something often missing in the corporate club experience. “My focus is 'Shop Local,' and my business is completely self-run," he says, “and what I like most about doing this is that I personally get to see people improve their physical and mental fitness through diet and exercise."

That dedication and care extends to supporting Autism Up; last year, Christiano founded the first Autism Walk Irondequoit (held in summer 2016). In just the first year, 150 participants raised $4,000 for Autism Up. Christiano, who plans to make it an annual event, has son with a diagnosis on the autism spectrum.

Christiano also sponsors youth hardball and supports the Irondequoit High School wrestling and football programs.

Future plans for Irondequoit Fitness include hopes to expand the gym. “This is all I have ever wanted to do," Christiano says. “My father, who passed away in 1999, always wanted me to open my own gym. I hope I have made him proud; if I have, that is all I care about."
