The Irondequoit Chamber of Commerce is pleased to recognize M&T Bank of Depot Plaza on East Ridge Road as the featured business for November 2015.
The iconic building has been a bank since the late 1970s and an M&T branch for 16 years, one that draws depositing customers from Webster and Greece. “This branch has seen a steady increase in volume of customers in the last five years, and especially the past 18 months," says Gus Schmitt, branch manager since 2010.
Founded in 1856, M&T Bank Corp. is based in Buffalo and is one of the 20 largest U.S. commercial bank holding companies, with more than $98 billion of assets and more than 650 branch offices in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. M&T Bank is also the largest Small Business Association lender in the northeast, and a multi-year winner of the Greenwich Excellence Awards for small business banking.
M&T Bank also takes an active and engaged role in the community, supporting 3,500 agencies and organizations with over $22M in donations. Supporting programs for children, education, and the arts, in Rochester alone M&T Bank annually distributes $1.4M to 200 local nonprofits. One of those programs is the Center for Youth summer reading program, providing books to kids over the summer to combat 'summer slide' in reading skills.
The East Ridge Road branch has hosted an on-site community recycle drive, and the staff volunteers every year at Foodlink, which distributes to Irondequoit Community Cupboard. Schmitt is also on the local employee board for United Way.
On a grand level, M&T supports Rochester Museum and Science Center, George Eastman House, GEVA Theatre, annually sponsors the Broadway season at Rochester Broadway Theatre League and Memorial Art Gallery's Clothesline Festival, and is also the Official Bank of the Buffalo Bills and the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival.
