In 2011, what was flourishing inside Personal Designs Florist spilled over outside, with the painting of the mural “The Four Seasons” on the building’s wall facing Titus Avenue’s westbound traffic. The original painting hangs inside Corky Wightman’s shop.

The corner of Cooper and Titus is always bright and in bloom at Personal Designs Florist, the Irondequoit Chamber of Commerce's February 2015 Business of the Month. Owner Corinne “Corky” Wightman brought her over 30 years of experience in floral design to the Irondequoit corner in 2010 when she outgrew her home studio and decided it was time to move to a retail storefront. The space adjacent to Cooper Deli and Titus Tavern was ideal for Wightman to introduce her brand of local, custom floral design.

Personal Design Florist offers flowers for everyday and all occasions, including orders for weddings and funerals, as well as for Valentine's Day, birthdays, congratulations, and corporate gifts. The shop also stocks plants for unique green arrangements with fresh cut flowers.

A graduate of Alfred State's horticulture merchandising program, Wightman focuses on very fresh, long-lasting custom floral designs. This focus means the shop offers a limited amount of gift items, choosing instead to dedicate space to wares by local artists, currently featuring oilcloth tote bags and aprons by CaPowdesigns.

With Valentine's Day just days away, Wightman is preparing for the onslaught of procrastinating sweethearts. “Everyone waits until the last minute,” she says. “It's a guessing game as far as what we will really need to have on hand, and then we'll have a crazy 48-72 hours getting ready.” It takes about 1,000 roses to get through this holiday, plus long hours for the shop's two other designers and two drivers. This year Personal Designs partnered with local restaurants to offer a dinner package that includes a signature gift-boxed rose arrangement, which is available from the florist shop year-round.

“The best part of being here is I love my customers,” says Wightman. “I take time with them because they're sending an emotion, so it's important that I get it right and make it a personal design.”
