The Irondequoit Chamber of Commerce is pleased to recognize Stitchworks Uniform & Sportswear as the featured business of the month for July 2015.
Stitchworks was founded in 1995 by Wendy Fair, who has sewed since childhood, when she started out by making custom baby bibs for friends and special customers at her waitressing job. Her late husband, Doug, a city fireman, had bought her a new sewing machine with an embroidery setting so she could also customize shirts for him and other firefighters.
Since that time, Stitchworks has grown to become a supplier of custom embroidered and screen printed apparel and accessories for schools, teams, and businesses. One of Stitchworks' longest customers is the Hilton Apple Festival, and their closest customers are Culver Parkway neighbors Netsin's Ice Cream and Courtesy Auto.
Wendy's start with one sewing machine at a home workshop, where she taught her children their colors using the embroidery thread, has grown to 14 automated machines that can reproduce branding and logos in minutes. All the work is done on-site at Stitchworks' Culver Parkway retail store and workshop.
Stitchworks' handiwork can be seen all over upstate New York on the shirts and caps worn by first responders, landscapers, carpenters, and painters. Customers often stop in for one-off projects, selecting from the store's large inventory of embroidery or screen print-ready items, or even bringing in their own item. Individual custom orders may be fancy embroidered bath towels, the canvas canopy for a boat's fly bridge, or a child's backpack.
School uniforms are an important niche for Stitchworks. Wendy says that during that season, children who aren't quite ready for back-to-school shopping are consoled by feeding treats to resident pup, Cooper.
In addition to school uniforms, Stitchworks Uniform & Sportswear carries a large stock of customizable clothing items, accessories, and gifts at their store located at 297 Culver Parkway, at the corner of Shelford Road. For hours and more information, visit www.stitchwork.com, or call 585-654-7522.
