Annual Awards Dinner Honors Irondequoit People and Places

Jan 25, 2016

On Friday, January 22, 2016, the Irondequoit Chamber of Commerce honored local people and places at our Annual Awards dinner at the Rochester Yacht Club. Though snowy and windswept along the Genesee River, the atmosphere inside the Yacht Club's Conewago Room (upstairs banquet room) was warm and festive.

The Irondequoit Chamber annually honors a Person of the Year and bestows Beautification Awards in categories for Best New Building, Best Renovation, Best Re-purposed Building, and Best Landscaping in Irondequoit.

Board President Rich Orczyk, Person of the Year Don Wood, Immediate Past President Fred Squicciarini.

Person of the Year

This year's Person of the Year is Donald E. Wood, a well known and longtime Irondequoit resident. Don has spent much of his adult life serving the Irondequoit community in many ways, from being a beloved school bus driver to volunteering with school children teaching them about “stranger danger". He has served Irondequoit Police Chief Tantalo, and his predecessor Chief Boyan. He has been a dedicated volunteer with Irondequoit Crime Prevention Coalition, the Advanced Citizens Police Academy, as well as being Captain of the Parkside Neighborhood Watch for over 20 years.

In 2011, Don was honored by the Grand Lodge of the State of New York with its General Douglas MacArthur Youth Award, which recognizes exemplary service to youth of the state. Don was honored in particular for his volunteer work in visiting Irondequoit's primary schools as part of IPD's Child Safety Program.

The Chamber's Immediate Past President Fred Squicciarini gave a warm introduction to Don, who graciously thanked his family. Don's wife Mary, son Christopher, and daughter-in-law Amanda joined him at the podium.
