On Saturday, September 10, a ribbon cutting and first pitch ceremony opened Irondequoit's newest ballpark complex, located just north of Town Hall on King's Highway. Teams from Irondequoit baseball and softball were on hand and ready to take the field.
What had been dirt piles just three years ago is now three baseball/softball diamonds with bleachers for spectators.
Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Morelle secured the funding necessary for the Town to purchase the land several years ago and has provided additional funding for further development of the fields and surrounding space.
Irondequoit Chamber Board Member John Sciarabba, President and CEO of LandTech Surveying & Planning PLLC, donated his expertise and services to help make the ball fields a reality. One of the three fields is named in of the memory of his father, Hank Sciarabba, who was a longtime coach and supporter of athletics in Irondequoit.
The other two fields were named in memory of Gilbert J. Morelle and Frank S. Imburgia Sr., both supporters of Irondequoit and Town youth programs. Frank Imburgia Jr. of FSI Construction is also a generous supporter of the ballpark complex.
Supervisor Seeley also announced that funding secured by State Senator Rich Funke will allow the Town to complete Phase II of the complex. This will include a concession stand, bathroom, and dugouts for two of the fields. Irondequoit Rotary has pledged to donate funds for scoreboards on two of the fields.
The ballpark complex will serve generations of young athletes and their parents.
