With one of our largest turn outs ever, the Irondequoit Chamber held it's Annual Awards Dinner and Presentation Friday evening at I-Square. Awards were presented for Beautification and Person of the Year over great food and drinks and even better company!
Person of the Year
Person of the Year winner, Debbie Evans, was genuinely surprised by the large turn out to support her at Friday evening's event. Friends and family filled seats and standing room to see Debbie receive her award. Debbie has spent over 25 years serving the Irondequoit community through the creation of the Irondequoit Community Cupboard. Her ability to assist all types of people in need from poverty, misplaced, to elderly has made our community a better place. Over Thanksgiving, the ICC provided food to 167 households.
We would also like to acknowledge that Debbie has been assisting those in need well before the Irondequoit Community Cupboard was created. Her work with the East Irondequoit School District PTA resulted in a state wide campaign to help less fortunate families. It was in an elementary school cafeteria that Debbie realized there was a real need to help feed and supply those in our community. Debbie started the community cupboard out of her home until her garage could no longer hold the donations. This prompted Debbie to purchase their current location where she, her family, her board, and volunteers work thoughtfully to help those in need.
Beautification Awards are given out in multiple categories to local businesses and developers who help keep Irondequoit looking great and growing economically. This year our award winners are:
Best New Building: Well Now/Aspen Dental - The HollandTrotta Project
Once the site of Brugger's Bagels and Quick Print, the new Well Now/Aspen Dental corner of Ridge Road East is occupied by a beautiful medical building. Award recipient, Ray Trotta, tells us that the project composed of taking down both buildings, re-subdividing the parcels and constructing two new medical office practices in their place. The new Wellnow/Aspen Dental facility was intended to be approximately a 6,700 square foot prominent commercial building to bookend the corner occupied by two tenants; +/-3,500 square foot dental office and a +/-3,200 square foot urgent care practice. The structure's aesthetic design goal was to maintain the current neighborhood characteristics as well as to begin a renaissance of revitalization conforming to the town's overall future plans for development/redevelopment in and along the Ridge Road East corridor.
Best Renovation: Murph's Irondequoit Pub - Dan & Cathie Murphy
Murph's has been a staple in the Irondequoit community and it was no surprise that their "regulars" followed them down the road to their new and beautiful Pattenwood location. Cathie tells us they absolutely love the plaza they are in and their neighbors. It was extremely important for the Murphys to stay in Irondequoit when choosing a new location. Not only did they remain in Irondequoit, they used local Irondequoit contractors like John Kane and architect Joe O'Donnell. Music is important to the Murphys which resulted in a beautifully designed entertainment area. The Murphys were able to retain and grow their staff in the new location and their children are now fully involved in the management of the business. This year, Murph's was the winner of the 2019 Cluck Crawl for best chicken wings! Stop in and check out the new Murph's Irondequoit Pub and don't forget to follow them on Facebook!
Best Re-Purpose: CubeSmart - Wegman Companies
The old Stepping Stones Learning Center was finally purchased and renovated in to CubeSmart Self Storage, a national owner and operator of storage facilities. The new CubeSmart features top-notch security gates, 24-hour video recording and brightly lit areas. The large building is now aesthetically pleasing and put back to use to grow the local economy.
Our Annual Awards Dinner could not be possible if it were not for all of our sponsors featured in the Awards Program. We would like to thank I_Square for hosting us for the second year in a row and their food donations. We also would like to thank Shelly's Sweet Shopp and Tasteful Connections for the amazing sweet treats.
